My Purple Identity

Some Purple WomenTM are single. Some Purple WomenTM are married. Some will marry a man who already has children from a previous union. Yes, women who are step-parents strongly identify as childfree. That's something I have learned along my purple journey these last two years.

No matter what your marital status, single or married --- (BTW, why do they ask if you've ever been Divorced on these doctor's office forms? It's none of their damn businesses. Please tell them so) -- I say we are Purple.

Am I childless, child-free or childfree? Depends on who you ask. Personally, I choose to define myself. I am Purple, and sometimes that's hard to define.

I understand why "childfree" is preferred by most as a way to describe themselves, but I like to describe myself as childless by choice. For me this shows intention and reminds people that we do have a choice.

Sometimes "less" is more if it is chosen.

Me, I prefer the world "childfree" because to my mind, childLESS implies a lack, a longing for something that's missing. And I really just don't feel that anything is missing. :)

To me, childfree means you are free from kids and have been free to make that choice.

Childless implies, to me, that you wanted them but never had them.

My husband and I are childfree. We have made the choice willingly and stick to it. Our lives are free to do as we please and I don't feel any 'less' a woman for not having a child.
